Since during pregnancy you are eating for two it is recommended that a healthy
weight woman increase her caloric intake by 300 calories per day. This should
be done especially during the 2nd and 3rd trimester when the baby’s growth
is the fastest. Note that 300 calories is not really much -- about one apple
or even a doughnut. So make the right choices, choose healthy foods. If you
do not eat enough calories, your baby could be born with a low birthweight,
which puts your baby at risk for serious short-term and/or long-term health
problems. Consult your doctor before and early during pregnancy to know the
increased calorie recommendation for you.
